A heat pump is an air conditioner that runs in both directions. In summer it moves heat out of your home like any AC; in winter it reverses and moves heat from the outdoor air inside. Because it moves heat rather than generating it, it can deliver more heating energy than the electricity it consumes.
Modern variable-speed heat pumps also excel at humidity control — they can run long, gentle cycles that wring moisture out of Charleston air instead of blasting and stopping.
Why it matters in the Lowcountry
Our climate is the textbook case for heat pumps: long, humid summers where their cooling shines, and winters mild enough that they rarely need backup heat.
For homes currently heating with electric resistance strips, a heat pump typically cuts winter operating cost substantially while upgrading summer dehumidification at the same time.

What affects the price
Every home is different, so we quote in writing before work begins. The main factors:
- Capacity and efficiency tier (SEER2/HSPF2 ratings)
- Variable-speed vs. single-stage compressors
- Whether backup heat strips are included or reused
- Ductwork modifications and electrical work
- Elevated or coastal installations that need corrosion-resistant equipment placement
Repair or replace?
Heat pumps work year-round, so they age faster in run-hours than a cooling-only AC. If yours is past its expected life and losing efficiency, replacement usually beats repeated repairs.

- Because heat pumps run in every season, twice-yearly maintenance matters more than for any other system type.
- Keep outdoor coils clean — in salt-air zones this is the single biggest longevity factor.
- Brief defrost cycles with steam on cold mornings are normal; constant icing is not.
